पौराणिक कथाओं में हमने सुना था कि कुछ ऋषियों के पास ऐसी सिद्धि होती थी जिसका उपयोग कर वे एक ही समय में दो स्थानों पर एकसाथ प्रकट हो सकते थे या दो स्थलों पर एकसाथ उपदेश दे सकते थे। ईसाई धर्म में ऋषि पद की मान्यता तब ही मिलती थी, जब कोई धर्मगुरु दो जगह एकसाथ दिखाई दे।   ये कथाएं कितनी काल्पनिक थीं या कितनी सच्ची? इसकी जांच के लिए अब न तो हमारे पास कोई साक्ष्य उपलब्ध है और न ही कोई गवाह। अत: अपनी अपनी सोच और भावनाओं के अनुसार इन कथाओं को व्यक्तिगत रूप से मान्य अथवा अमान्य किया जाता रहा है।   किंतु बात यहीं नहीं रुकती। हम अपने पाठकों को बता दें कि जैसे-जैसे विज्ञान आगे बढ़ रहा है, वैसे-वैसे ये कथाएं पुन: जीवंत हो रही हैं। विज्ञान अब इन संभावनाओं को तलाशने में जुट गया है कि एक ही क्षण में एक व्यक्ति का दो स्थानों पर दिखना क्या वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोण से संभव है? जैसा कि हम भी जानते हैं कि ब्रह्मांड के रहस्यों को जानना वैसा ही है, जैसे समुद्र में गोता लगाकर मछलियों को गिनने की कोशिश करना। इसके बाद भी वैज्ञानिक और खगोलशास्त्री हिम्मत नहीं हारते हैं। उन्होंने विशाल आकाशीय गतिम...

In July 2015, the New Horizons spacecraft made history when it became the first robotic explorer to conduct a flyby of Pluto. Blobs of hot, dense material that curl around Earth's core are much more widespread than previous research suggests.  A new method of analysing earthquake data has found even more of the previously detected continent-sized zones at the boundary between the planet's core and mantle. We still don't know what these blobs are - they could be magma, molten iron leaking from the core, or something else -  but with a more complete, detailed map of where they are, we can better understand the geological processes occurring deep inside Earth's interior. On human timescales, things in the Solar System seem to be pretty set in place. Over cosmic timescales, it's all gradually falling apart. The planets are very, very slowly moving away from the Sun; and most of the moons are slowly moving away from their planets in a process called tidal acceleration. The fact that Titan is slowly moving away from its planet - Saturn - is therefore not at all unusual. But astronomers have found something really surprising: Titan's outward migration is faster than expected - about 100 times faster. This suggests that the peculiar moon formed much closer to the planet during the birth of the Solar System 4.5 billion years ago, and in the intervening years has migrated out to a distance of around 1.2 million kilometres (746,000 miles) from the planet.
